Remembrance Day
LEST WE FORGET. The days leading up to and including Remembrance Day are a great opportunity to share with our children about our past and present as it relates to war and freedom. Plan learning opportunities to the level of your kids; as the years move forward the depth of learning will grow. Here are some ideas:
The Poppy
Read and discuss In Flanders Fields by John McCrae
Watch The History of the Poppy
Purchase and wear a poppy
Make a Remembrance Day Agamograph or an age appropriate Poppy Art from Pinterest
Bake Poppy Cookies
Download a Remembrance Day Unit Study from Teacher’s Pay Teachers
Learn about WWI and WWII through books and online research
Over The Top by Canadian War Museum is a great interactive game that allows children to experience life in the trenches through a choose-your-own-adventure story/game. Isabella and I went through the experience together. The older girls experienced the adventure solo but enthusiastically shared their ongoing experiences with each other.
Moment of Silence
Discuss and research: Why do we have 2 minutes silence? What is the significance of 11/11 at 11am.
Participate in a moment of silence at 11am on November 11th.
What kind of activities do you do with your kids to prepare them for this special day of remembrance? Share them in the comments below.
