Kids Renovate a Barbie House: Tiny House, Big Living NYC Edition

I love providing opportunities for creativity. The girls and I can get lost in projects for days at a time. Planning, purchasing materials and implementing our vision excites and captivates us. Some may say it's distracting and a waste of time, but I think of it as enriching time, and well spent. Through projects my girls learn problem solving, life skills, measurements, teamwork, money management and more.

We had an old barbie house that my girls never used; we could have discarded it but instead I saw it as an opportunity to express their creativity. We love renovation shows and thought it would be fun to cast them as designers in HGTV's Tiny House, Big Living NYC Edition. We had a blast! I gave the vision and "assignment," they were each assigned a floor and told they needed to design a living space for a family. Because the space was small they had to think creatively about how to utilize each space to fit all the families needs. I helped along the way with construction, using the x-acto knife and glue gun for the younger girls but the vision was all theirs.

They each had a budget of $15 to choose materials. We set out to the dollar store to collect what we needed. You literally can find everything at the dollar store including flooring and carpet. Once we had the material we set out to work. As the contractor, I sat down for a meeting with each girl to discuss their plans and design then set to work to take down walls, remove the staircase and prepare the space for flooring.

It's only fitting that let the world renowned designer Sienna share her design with you in her own words. Over to you Sienna:

When I noticed the floor space in apartment 02, I knew I had to use the space wisely. I also knew that I could make the house stylish, and not claustrophobic. At the time, I didn't know how I was going to fit in a living room, kitchen and bedroom. There were two porches in apartment 02 but I decided to take a wall out to make it an open concept kitchen and living area.

I found all of the material I needed at Dollarama to make a perfect, beautiful and stylish home. I found a nice wallpaper to put on the walls and Murphy bed. I found the perfect carpet for the bedroom and living space, and used laminate for the kitchen and grass we had left over from a different project for the porch. I added sticker tiles for a visual pop on the porch, and added mini boxes, cupboards and counter top.

I decided that I needed to have a living space and a bedroom in one so I thought that having a Murphy bed could make the space more open. As an edition, I put a custom made couch underneath that could stay under the bed even when the Murphy bed is down. I used a shoe box lid for the mattress and covered it in wallpaper. I attached a screw in the wall, and a picture hanger on the bed and used a rubber band to hold it open. All you have to do is detach the rubber band and voila, from living room to bedroom! I think that the Murphy bed is a great addition for my house.

I added a family portrait to the living room wall to add a personal touch. My clients loved their new home in NYC!  - Sienna

Apartment 45 - Designer: Hayden

Apartment 45 - Designer: Hayden

Designer, Hayden has been featured on HGTV's Tiny House, Big Living and it's no wonder. She hits it out of the park every time. Her use of space in unit 45 is no exception. Hayden removed stairs and added laminate and carpeting throughout. Her loft bed is genius and the custom artwork of the Statue of Liberty is a stunning addition to the space. We love how she has brought the big city into this tiny, well designed NYC apartment. A job well done, but what did her clients have to say:

"Wow, Hayden exceeded our expectations! She was able to balance beauty and functionality. We love our new home." - The Carlson Family
