Dinner & A Movie: The Sound of Music
This week, we packed our imaginations and headed to the rolling hills of Austria with a Sound of Music-inspired dinner night! Few films feel as timeless and comforting as this one—with its sweeping views, endearing characters, and music that sticks in your head (in the best way) for days.
So, in true Dinner & a Movie fashion, we decided to turn this family classic into an evening to remember—complete with nostalgic food, a cozy tablescape, and a whole lot of Do-Re-Mi.
The Tablescape: A Few of Our Favorite Things
We kept it sweet and simple, drawing inspiration from the movie’s iconic moments and Austrian charm. Daisies and baby’s breath were tucked into rustic pitchers, giving that alpine meadow feel. Brown paper packages (yes—tied up with string!) doubled as table décor. We added antique brass candle holders for that warm glow and even set out a guitar for an impromptu singalong.
It felt like something Maria might've put together herself—inviting, homemade, and full of joy.
The Menu: Comfort Food, Austrian Style
We leaned into cozy classics with a nod to Austria’s traditional dishes:
🥒 Cucumber Salad – Crisp and tangy with fresh dill and a vinegar-based dressing.
🥩 Schnitzel – Breaded and pan-fried to golden perfection. (A family favorite!)
🍝 Spaetzle – Those soft, buttery German egg noodles that feel like the love child of pasta and dumplings. If you’re short on time, feel free to swap in store-bought egg noodles—no judgment here!
🍏 Apple Strudel – Light, flaky pastry wrapped around cinnamon-spiced apples. It’s warm, sweet, and the perfect grand finale to this cozy meal.
We played the soundtrack softly in the background while cooking, and let’s just say… Climb Every Mountain hits different when you’re elbow-deep in breadcrumbs and flour.
There’s something magical about watching The Sound of Music as a family. Whether you’re a longtime fan or introducing it to your kids for the first time, it has a way of drawing everyone in—tugging at the heartstrings while lifting the spirit.
My personal favorite scene? The rainstorm that melts into that cheerful adventure montage. It captures everything this movie stands for: choosing joy, standing together, and singing through the storms.
If you host your own Sound of Music evening, tag me—I’d love to see it. 🎶
Until next week… the hills are alive, my friends!
